For the Oklahoma City “MAPS for Kids” program, Wheeler Elementary was converted into a new Pre-K through 5th grade facility. For Phase I, the existing 47,800 square foot building was renovated to include updated classrooms, a career technology center, and music / visual arts laboratory. Significant building code and accessibility upgrades were necessary to bring the existing vintage three-story facility into compliance.
Phase II, is a 32,000 square foot new addition that features a FEMA safe room, kitchen/cafeteria space, a new state-of-the-art media center, a gymnasium and four early childhood classrooms. Special considerations were given when integrating the new addition with the existing historical school building.
